What is Periowave?
Periowave is a laser therapy treatment that is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Laser light therapy is a non-invasive and highly effective photodisinifection procedure that will eliminate a far greater number of bacteria than can be removed mechanically.
With this treatment, we can disinfect your gums, getting rid of the harmful toxins and bacteria causing periodontal disease without the need to use antibiotics and without the need for surgery.
Periowave is a gentle yet effective treatment that is extremely safe. It destroys bacteria without relying on antibiotics and this procedure is relatively quick.
Periowave is a cool, a non-thermal laser light that activates a photosensitizing solution designed to kill bacteria. This process halts the progression of the disease and allows healing to begin. It is a non-thermal diode laser that will not damage your tooth roots, the tissues surrounding infected areas or any dental materials that have been used to restore your teeth.
Who Can Have Periowave?
Treatment can be useful for people with the early stages of periodontal disease called gingivitis, as well as for ongoing treatment for chronic periodontitis, deep gum pockets accumulate harmful bacteria.
This procedure is also recommended for people who have implants with peri-implantitis, a bacterial infection similar to periodontal disease and which affects the tissues surrounding dental implants.
How Does Treatment Work?
Prior to having laser therapy, we clean the areas to be treated, normally through scaling and polishing or scaling and root planing.
Your teeth and gums may be cleaned immediately before treatment or a few days earlier. This helps to remove some of the bacteria and toxins responsible for the infection but many of these pathogenic bacteria will still remain just below the gum line.
Combining these treatments with Periowave treatment is a way to more thoroughly disinfect your gums.
Once your mouth is ready, your hygienist will first irrigate infected gums using a special photosensitising solution that is applied topically to the areas to be treated. This special solution attaches itself to the harmful bacteria and toxins responsible for causing periodontal disease.
Next, we use a very thin, plastic light diffusing tip that is placed directly into the gum pocket, illuminating it with a laser light that activates the photosensitising solution. The laser light is specifically calibrated to destroy harmful bacteria and toxins.
